about

A set of nine improvisations made with the Sequillodyne, a unique handmade modular synthesiser created by Joe Paint (aka Green Dungeon Alchemist Laboratories) in 2015, built into a repurposed wooden box.

The device is essentially 3 of Joe's C439 Otrillodyne oscillators under sequencer control. The sequencer itself is highly playable and can be influenced/reset over CV by making contact with tin touch plates, manipulating light sensors or pressing keys on it's 5 note keyboard.

Control voltages generated from the Sequillodyne are used to trigger a Nord Drum 1 and modulate the functions of a pair of Moog Murf pedals, one for each device. Reverb and delay are applied at the end of the audio path using an original Korg mini KP. The performances are presented in chronological order without any editing, post-production or mastering.
All the tracks begin and end by pressing the Sequillodyne's oversized power button on, then off.

The brevity of some of the titles reflects the limit of my tolerance for standing up at the time of recording.
In July 2023 I had an operation that left me temporarily bed-bound. I was advised to try and be as active as possible to speed up recovery, but unfortunately standing and walking was proving to be painful..
I needed a distraction to help keep me on my feet for longer periods.

After 8 years just sitting on the shelf gathering dust, I suddenly had the idea to power up the Sequillodyne and try some casual recording. Hearing it's charmingly rude sound and unruly behaviour again after a long break prompted instant laughter and a joyful feeling that seemed to help the experience of pain recede. The visceral heterodyning Otrillodyne sounds of the wooden thing had shifted my attention.
I'd found a noisy panacea to ease my predicament, aid recovery and provide some much needed fun during those long empty days last Summer.

Play it loud!
